Crab’s Claw: Local Catch

Where: Crab’s Claw Oceanfront Fine Foods: Fine Caribbean Cuisine, 201 West Atlantic Blvd., Atlantic Beach, NC 28512

The Crab’s Claw has been featured in Southern Living Magazine’s “Top 10 Southern Seafood Dives”.

GF Menu: No.

What I ate: Coastal Cobb Salad + Side of Plantains

How to order it: When ordering a salad, just be sure to ask the server which salad dressings are Gluten-Free, and to leave off any croutons.

What it looks like:

Cobb SaladBaby greens topped with boiled eggs, fresh & local crab claw meat, avocado, purple onions, radishes, crispy bacon bits, and gorgonzola cheese. An innovative take on the classic Cobb salad, this dish was a flavorful tapestry of tastes and textures. The fresh crab meat and avocados were surprising delights among the more familiar ingredients. For the salad dressing, I chose a delicious house Blackberry Maple Vinaigrette.

The side of fresh plantains (not pictured here) came to the table hot from the stove, seasoned with a teensy bit of cayenne pepper, coconut oil, and perhaps a little vanilla. This dish could be eaten as a dessert. It was almost like bananas foster, but without the overwhelming sweetness. It was a perfect companion to the cool salad greens.

I visited again in May of 2015 and enjoyed the following GF meals of seared tuna steak and mussels:

Green Note: The Crab’s Claw’s Executive Chef and Owner, Antionette M. Oberci (Toni), commits to preparing “only the freshest hand-selected fish, all locally caught.”

This restaurant has two full decks and outdoor dining area overlooking the Atlantic ocean. The interior restaurant is surrounded by windows, so you can watch the waves (and the kitesurfers, when they’re out).

Finally, the “Rules of the Crab’s Claw” posted on their website, include a great “green tip”: Share what you have.

  • Life should be a delicious feast.
  • Do and Eat what makes you happy.
  • Share what you have, even if it’s just one bite with your neighbor.
  • Be ADVENTUROUS! Try something new.
  • Good food deserves good conversation. Help yourself to both!
  • Say “YES” as often as possible – Especially to dessert!
