Cafe Asia: Fantastic Fusion (Now CLOSED)

Update: It is reported on Yelp and Urbanspoon that Cafe Asia has closed.

Where: Cafe Asia: Sushi Bar and Asian Fusion Cuisine, 9650 Strickland Rd., Suite 145, Raleigh, NC

GF Menu: No. The attentive staff, however, are very willing to answer your questions about ingredients.

What I ate: We shared two entrees – the Roasted Eggplant  and the Shrimp Pad Thai (both come with either soup or side salad) + Green Tea from the Lunch Menu

How to order it: Ask whether the soy or fish sauces in your dish contain wheat or gluten. When we asked, our server verified that the sauces that the kitchen staff use when preparing the Thai dishes do not contain gluten. The soy sauce that is placed on the tables (for use in dipping Japanese Sushi), however, does contain wheat. If you plan to order sushi (and Cafe Asia has an extensive and exciting sushi menu), ask whether there is a Gluten-Free soy sauce, or bring your own.

At Cafe Asia, you can specify your desired level of spiciness when you place your order. If you are familiar with another exceptionally good Thai restaurant in the Raleigh area called Lemongrass (click here for March 2010 post), you may be prepared for the level of hotness in these dishes. These two restaurants are sister establishments, owned by the same management.

What it looks like:

Pictured here are the two sides to our entrees. The salad was prepared with crisp lettuce and carrot and radish shavings. It came with a small glass ramekin of a smooth and slightly hot peanut sauce. The Thai coconut Tom Yum soup came with freshly chopped red pepper, onions, mushroom halves, small squares of tofu, and cilantro. I ordered it “Medium Hot” and let me tell you, it was a very BOLD medium! Though I was dabbing the tears from my eyes from the red pepper in the soup, I loved every bite!

The restaurant features soft romantic lighting, even mid-day, that complements the modern, but natural surroundings. That said, this picture of the entrees came out a little dark. You’ll have to take my word for it that the colors in these dishes were as vibrant as the fragrance of the ingredients.

The Pad Thai featured rice noodles, sprouts, lightly sauteed tofu, and delicious fresh shrimp (traditionally left with the tail still on). The gorgeous eggplant dish came with hearty portions of chopped asian eggplant, carrots, onions, tofu, a garnish of shaved red beets, and a side of jasmine rice.

Green Note: Let’s talk about saving money! Right now at Cafe Asia, they are featuring a promotional deal. You can order one entree (Lunch or Dinner) and get the second entree 1/2 price. Additionally, they are hosting a Buy-One-Get-One-Free offer on all sushi rolls. This is for a limited time only, so hurry over to Cafe Asia soon!
