The Remedy Diner: A Cure for the “Naked Sandwich Blues”

Where: The Remedy Diner, 137 E. Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC 27601

GF Menu: No, however, Gluten-Free bread is available for an additional $1.00. They also explain that their deli meats are GF:

“We only use Boar’s Head meats which contain no fillers, gluten, artificial colors, flavors, or trans fat. They are fresh and never frozen.”

What I ate: Veggie Reuben + Fried Broccoli

How to order it: When ordering a sandwich, ask for the GF bread. Check with the server to make sure that any included dressings or marinades are also Gluten-Free.

What it looks like:

GF Diners, when was the last time you enjoyed a real sandwich in a restaurant? I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had to sheepishly order, “I’ll have the insides of a sandwich. Please, hold the bread.” At The Remedy Diner, I re-joined the ranks of the bona fide sandwich-eating populus, and it felt GOOD!

The Remedy Diner offers two versions of their reuben: one pastrami and one veggie. Though an omnivore, I was curious to shake things up and try the veggie version. I am glad I did! It was a flavorful treat: marinated tempeh grilled on buttered GF bread, topped with avocado, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, dill pickles, and melted swiss. The avocado really made this sandwich memorable.

All sandwiches come with your choice of kettle chips, fried broccoli, or homemade slaw. When they say fried broccoli, they mean “deep-fried!” It was not breaded. Hooray! I swear, someone should serve this at the State Fair.

Green Note: The following text is taken from the menu page on their website:

We strive to provide both vegetarians and omnivores a comfortable place to dine together, with numerous options for all. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, it is your responsibility to inform your server. We cannot be held responsible for mistaken consumption of meat-based products.

The Remedy Diner is committed to using fresh, local, and organic ingredients whenever possible. The majority of our menu is made from scratch daily.
