518 West: Mangia Mangia Pasta!

Where: 518 West – Italian Cafe, Raleigh, NC. The original sibling restaurant is 411 West, in Chapel Hill, NC.

GF Menu: No, but they have GF Pasta upon request! You can order just about any pasta dish with the GF pasta substitute. The type of pasta (penne, spaghetti, etc.) available may vary, but 518 West, and their sibling restaurant, 411 West, in Chapel Hill, provide a GF alternative.

What I ate: Mediterranean Primavera from the Lunch Menu

How to order it: The option for GF pasta is mentioned on their regular menu, and you can ask the server what your GF options are that day. If you select a pasta dish, the server can then help determine whether the dish you have selected contains any wheat in the sauce (some sauces contain wheat flour as a thickener).

What it looks like:

GF spaghetti (this particular type was made with corn) with garlic, olive oil, spinach, oven roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, feta, and pine nuts. The pasta was so convincing, I had to remind myself that this was a gluten-free dish. I was in Italian heaven.

Green Note: The day we visited, the friendly hostess, Katy Horton, explained that 518 West does their best to purchase local ingredients when in season. They cook with hormone-free beef and farm-raised organic salmon. The goat cheese and the spinach are brought in by local farmers.

The restaurant has its own green story. Originally built in 1913 and used as a storage depot, The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group purchased the building in 1994. When they removed the second story offices, they salvaged and reused as many of the original wooden beams and trusses as possible during their renovations.

  2. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox
and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
    Cheers!

    1. Hi. I am looking into your question. Do you have a WordPress account? If so, I believe you need to log in to change your own comment settings. I am not able to adjust those from this end, unfortunately. Alternately, you could unsubscribe, and if still interested, resubscribe without checking the “Notify me…” box. I hope this helps.
